This exquisite pair of original 18th-century engravings by Angelo Campanella brings a striking blend of classical antiquity and tailored modern design to any interior. Born in Rome circa 1748, Campanella was a highly regarded Italian painter and engraver who trained under the prominent printmaker Giovanni Volpato. He is best known for his masterful engravings of the statues of the twelve apostles in the church of St. John Lateran, as well as his contributions to Gavin Hamilton’s Schola Italica. Each piece in this set is signed "Campanella inc." (short for incidit, meaning "engraved by") in the plate, authenticating it as the work of the historic Roman master.
The highly detailed intaglio prints feature captivating sculptural studies: one depicting a fragmented classical male torso resting upon a rocky outcropping, and the other showcasing a heavily textured, rustic tree trunk pedestal supporting a basin of male torsos. Both artworks exhibit Campanella's masterful, deep linework, clearly displaying the prominent plate marks (the indentation left by the copper printing plate) that verify their antique origins.
To beautifully bridge the gap between historic art and contemporary styling, the engravings have been professionally float-mounted within deep, moody black matting and housed in high-quality modern burlwood veneer frames. The rich, mottled warmth of the polished burlwood perfectly contrasts with the monochromatic antique prints, creating a dramatic, curated presentation ideal for a gallery wall, study, or sophisticated living space.
