Vintage 1930s Oil on Canvas Landscape by Listed Artist Robert Karl Gaensslen

This stunning, large-scale vintage oil on canvas is a verified work by listed American artist Robert Karl Gaensslen (1867–1949). Known for his atmospheric landscapes, Gaensslen was an Ohio-born painter who settled in Los Angeles in 1910, where he became active in the local art scene, exhibiting at venues such as the Wilshire Gallery and Marzon Studio in the 1920s.

The painting captures a serene, sun-drenched landscape—likely a Southern California scene characteristic of his output between 1920 and 1949. The composition draws the eye along a dry, rocky creek bed winding through a grove of slender trees, all rendered in a soft, impressionistic style. The color palette is wonderfully grounded in earthy autumnal tones—muted ochres, warm siennas, and hazy greens—contrasted against a pale, ethereal sky. Gaensslen’s brushwork is particularly expressive in the foreground, where thick, textured applications of paint give life to the scattered river rocks and low-lying brush.

The painting is housed in its original ornate gilded frame, featuring intricate scrolling floral motifs and a deep profile that adds gallery-level presence. On the reverse, the canvas is secured to its wooden stretcher with period-correct oxidized tacks. Please note that there is a small, singular puncture/indentation in the canvas (visible upon close inspection in the lower-left quadrant), which is consistent with a piece of this age and does not detract from the overall visual impact.

As much as possible, we utilize recycled shipping boxes. The box you receive your item in may show signs of wear and pre-use.
