  • Details
This is a fine antique copperplate engraving of the celebrated Scottish Royalist leader, James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose (1612-1650). This original portrait print was executed and dated 1740, placing it firmly in the period of mid-18th century British historical printmaking.

The work was masterfully engraved by the renowned Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken in Amsterdam, who based his portrait on an original painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck. The print notes that the source painting was, at the time of engraving, in the possession of the Duke of Montrose. The completed work was then published in London by the prominent firm of I. & P. Knapton, situating this engraving within a major series of historical portraits they produced.

The antique print is presented in a black and gilt frame. The reverse of the frame bears a fascinating historical label identifying the framer as Alex. Drysdale, a Carver, Gilder, and Picture Frame Maker located at 48 Frederick Street, Edinburgh. This suggests the print was framed or professionally restored in Scotland by this firm, likely during the late 19th or early 20th century, adding another layer to the object's provenance.
