Details
Presenting a remarkable piece of late 18th-century art history, this antique stipple engraving features the portrait of "Rich. L.d Chancellor" (Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich), based on the original drawing by the legendary Tudor court painter Hans Holbein. Published on October 1, 1794, by John Chamberlaine, this piece was meticulously engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi, the esteemed Historical Engraver to His Majesty. The print is a genuine artifact from the highly regarded folio Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein in the Collection of His Majesty, a project designed to replicate the subtle, lifelike qualities of Holbein's original sketches held in the Royal Collection.
The portrait beautifully showcases Bartolozzi's mastery of the stipple engraving technique, rendering the Lord Chancellor's features with incredible softness, depth, and character. The artwork is housed in a handsome antique wooden frame featuring a dark painted finish and a delicate gilt inner border, perfectly complementing the gravitas of the Tudor subject. As expected with a piece over 200 years old, the print exhibits a warm, age-appropriate patina, including natural toning and minor foxing that authenticate its history. The reverse reveals an aged wooden frame assembly with old browned backing paper, vintage cloth tape reinforcements, and a wire hanger. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a verified 1794 Bartolozzi engraving of a prominent historical figure, perfect for elevating a gallery wall, a study, or a dark academia aesthetic.
