  • Details
This is a beautiful and elegant antique silver-plated comport (or tazza) crafted by the notable American manufacturer, the Wallace Bros. The Wallace Bros. Silver Co. was a predecessor to the modern Wallace Silversmiths, Inc., originally founded as R. Wallace & Sons in 1835 by Robert Wallace in Wallingford, Connecticut. The company name changed to Wallace Brothers Silver Company between 1856 and 1884, before becoming known as Wallace Silversmiths. This lineage is significant, as the Wallace silver family was one of the most prominent producers of American silver and silver plate during the Gilded Age. This piece reflects that period's style, likely dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian eras (c. 1880s–1910s). The piece features a classic pedestal form designed for displaying fruits, nuts, or sweetmeats, with the shallow bowl adorned by exceptionally intricate geometric and foliate etched patterns typical of the era's sophisticated taste. The silver plate finish carries a beautiful, authentic dark patina, particularly nestled within the engraved recesses, which serves as a testament to its age. This piece is a wonderful find for collectors of antique American hollowware or anyone seeking a stunning, sculptural centerpiece for a dining room or curio display.

Disclosures: Heavy tarnish consistent with vintage age. The top of the compote bowl has a little bit of a lean and presents slightly forward (see listing photos closely) - we're not sure if this is original to the design or due to wear overtime. Otherwise, no major flaws to note.

Measurements (approximate - rounded to the nearest quarter inch):
6.75 inches in diameter across top
    6.5 inches tall
    3.75 inches diameter across base
