Details
A truly striking piece of living history, this Tamegroute ceramic compote is handmade in the remote village of Tamegroute, Morocco, the "last stop before the desert." This pedestal bowl showcases the region's centuries-old pottery tradition, resulting in a sculptural object that is beautifully, authentically imperfect.
What sets this piece apart is its intentional, rustic beauty. The glossy, rich moss-green glaze is the signature of Tamegroute pottery, achieved through a unique mineral composition of local clay and copper oxide fired in traditional wood-fired kilns. The color shifts organically from deep emerald to olive, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Further highlighting its handcrafted origin is the beautifully imperfect "sawtooth" or ruffled rim, a dramatic detail that emphasizes its wabi-sabi aesthetic. Due to the high-heat firing process, authentic Tamegroute pottery displays unique variations that are celebrated as part of its charm. These might include crazing, minor glaze runs, color spots, or small kiln marks on the base—these are the unmistakable signatures of a truly handcrafted piece.
Elevated on a pedestal base, this compote is designed to be a centerpiece. It's the perfect size for displaying fresh fruit, holding decorative items like dried botanicals or coral, or simply adding a warm, rustic element to your interiors. This piece is in excellent vintage condition, consistent with its handmade, rustic nature. While Tamegroute pottery is typically food-safe, we recommend lining the bowl or using it for dry foods and decorative display to best preserve its authentic, porous surface.
