A quintessential piece of Georgian art and sporting history, this framed mezzotint and etching from circa 1755-56 presents an equestrian portrait of "Childers, the Fleetest Horse that Ever Run at Newmarket." This captivating engraving immortalizes one of the most legendary racehorses of the era, celebrated for its unparalleled speed at the famous Newmarket racecourse.

The piece is a collaboration of notable 18th-century artists. It is made after original designs by the renowned English sporting painters James Seymour (1702-1752) and Thomas Spencer (approx. 1700-1767), with the engraving masterfully executed by the accomplished Irish engraver, Richard Houston (approx. 1722-1775). The print bears the original marks "Seymour delin t" and "Houston fecit" in the lower corners, authenticating its creation.

Published in the United Kingdom by Robert Clee in 1755 this print is a fine example of mezzotint, a process known for its rich tonal ranges and deep, velvety blacks. It captures the spirit and grandeur of the subject with exceptional detail.

This historic engraving is presented in a period-appropriate frame, with a stamp on the back indicating it was last framed on or around August 13th, 1958.

This piece is a magnificent addition for collectors of equestrian art, enthusiasts of horse racing history, or anyone seeking to own a genuine artifact from the Mid 18th Century, a period defined by the reign of George II. Its combination of artistic excellence and historical significance makes it a truly unique find.

This engraving is well preserved and remains in excellent condition. The gilt textured mat around the engraving sets under glass and shows significant signs of age and wear in the form of craquelure. See listing photos and video for best description. Frame and matting remain structurally sound. Equipped with a hanging wire for easy installation.
